More to this place

In recent years of arts practice, I have been paying more attention to place, drawing inspiration from the beautiful country around my local, Canberra. While Canberra, Ngunnawal Country, is not my peoples’ country, there is something more that keeps me here, a pull that is invisible and sensed within. Perhaps my ancestors are telling me to look deeper into the history of what is under my feet in this place?

Though painted on a circular surface, the mountain lines on each side extend the scenery beyond the comfortable community bubble and lure the eye down into the depth of the culture and history in this space. There is so much more I want to know about my local, as represented through the multidirectional pathways. I am enticed by the finer details of the landscape and am discovering stories of people who walked here before me as represented through the multilayered dots.

I ask the viewer to look beyond the place they know as Canberra, to immerse themselves within our local landscape and learn about the culture, history and First Nations people of the country we live on. Under our feet are more stories waiting to be told.
